Soil samples are very important for small plots or large pots; before planting and applying fertilizer be sure to collect soil from your planting plot/ lawn for analysis.  Take samples within the top 6 inches of soil – the images above give some direction as to how many and where to collect in a plot.  You really only need about a quart-sized bag of soil to send off for analysis.  However, this may vary depending on the size of the plot.  Consider completing a soil sample analysis about every 3 – 5 years.  This will allow you to amend the soil properly so that plants can use available nutrients properly.   If the pH is off, then plants cannot use the available nutrients.
