The Isabella Varsity Mustangs turned in an eventful day on the diamond Monday, splitting a four game slate with two commanding victories over Central of Coosa County and two losses to a strong Horseshoe Bend squad.
Isabella opened the day in dominant fashion, overpowering Central of Coosa County 17-2 behind an explosive first inning that produced 13 runs. The Mustangs showcased patience and power at the plate, combining timely hits with 13 walks to overwhelm the Cougars early. Betsy Torres led the charge with three RBIs, while Eden Lewis, Kinsley Duckworth, and Aubreigh Davenport contributed big performances. Torres also earned the win in the circle, allowing just one hit and no earned runs over two innings.
The momentum carried into their second matchup against Central of Coosa County, where the Mustangs secured another convincing win, 14-4. After a back and forth start, Isabella pulled away with a five run fourth inning highlighted by a three run home run from Duckworth. Emily Castleberry paced the offense with three hits, while Torres delivered another strong pitching performance, striking out eight over nearly six innings.
Despite their success against Central, the Mustangs struggled to keep pace with Horseshoe Bend in two matchups. In the first meeting, Isabella fell 12-2 as Horseshoe Bend capitalized on early scoring opportunities and drew 10 walks. Cara Mae Davis led the opposition with four RBIs, while Isabella’s offense was limited despite multi hit efforts from Eden Lewis.
The final game of the day saw the Mustangs drop a 6-1 decision to Horseshoe Bend. Isabella managed just one run against a steady pitching performance from Brynlee Alford, who went the distance. Duckworth led Isabella at the plate, going 2 for 3 with the team’s lone RBI.
Across the four games, Isabella displayed offensive firepower, aggressive base running, and disciplined plate appearances, particularly in their two wins. However, control issues on the mound and strong opposing pitching proved to be challenges against Horseshoe Bend.
The Mustangs leave the day with valuable experience from a demanding schedule, showing both their high scoring potential and areas to improve as they move forward in the season.
